George Black
When George Black a young lawyer came to the Yukon at age 25, he staked a claim on Livingstone Creek. He worked on the riverboats but then opened a law practice in Dawson. In 1905 he was elected to the Yukon Territorial Council and later named Commissioner. George Black led a Yukon Regiment to Europe in World War I.
In 1920 he was elected Member of Parliament to the Yukon. He was Speaker of the House of Commons in 1930. After he became ill, his wife Martha was elected the Conservative member for Yukon and was the 2nd woman to sit in the House of Commons. She had married George Black in 1904. In 1940 George again became Yukon's Member of Parliament. He remained so until 1949.
